n pl :  a family of strictly parasitic more or less slender and elongated uniflagellate protozoans of the order Kinetoplastida that includes some serious pathogens of humans and domestic animals and contains the genera Crithidia, Herpetomonas, Leishmania, Leptomonas, Phytomonas, and Trypanosoma .
