n 1  :  a heat-stable component of bovine serum that combines with red blood cells which have been treated with antibody and that causes rapid strong agglutination followed by lysis  2  :  a substance or substances in blood plasma that may be a mixture of albumin and globulin and that cause clumping when added to red blood cells which are combined with blocking antibody .
