Gilbert, William (1544-1603),
British physician and physicist. Gilbert was the foremost scientist in Elizabethan England and was physician to the Queen. He was a notable early supporter of the Copernican view of the universe. In 1600 he published a major work on magnetism. Gilbert is regarded as the father of electrical studies.
