n 1  vocal cords  pl  :  either of two pairs of folds of mucous membrane of which each member of each pair stretches from the thyroid cartilage in front to the arytenoid cartilage in back, contains a band of fibrous or elastic tissue, and has a free edge projecting into the cavity of the larynx toward the contralateral member of the same pair forming a cleft which can be opened or closed:  a  :  FALSE VOCAL CORDS  b  :  TRUE VOCAL CORDS  2  :  VOCAL LIGAMENT .
