n : any of a group of RNA-containing spherical or oval viruses (as a hantavirus) that are usu. transmitted by the bite of an arthropod (as a mosquito), that infect vertebrates and arthropods, and that include the causative agents of sandfly fever, Rift Valley fever, and some forms of encephalitis and hemorrhagic fever .
