n :  any of a group of anaerobic microorganisms classified as a family (Methanobacteriaceae) of bacteria or as a distinct taxon (Archaebacteria) of prokaryotic organisms which produce methane from carbon dioxide and hydrogen and some of which are found in the rumina or ceca of vertebrate herbivores (as cattle and elephants) that utilize cellulose .
