n :  a molecular mechanism by which sodium ions are actively transported across a plasma membrane : esp  :  the one by which the appropriate internal and external concentrations of sodium and potassium ions are maintained in a nerve fiber and which involves the active transport of sodium ions outward with movement of potassium ions to the interior .
