n pl :  various bacteria (as Thiobacillus denitrificans and Paracoccus denitrificans) that bring about denitrification - used esp. of forms that reduce nitrates to nitrites or nitrites to nitrogen gas (as many common putrefactive organisms of manure and soil) .
